How to Install a Catch Basin
- Find the low spot where water collects, or the base of the downspout.
- Dig so the grate finishes flush with the grade.
- Fit the outlets: snap in adapters facing the pipe run and plug any unused opening.
- Run the pipe downhill to daylight, a storm drain or a dry well, then backfill, compact and set the grate.

What is the difference between a catch basin and a yard drain?
A yard drain is any grated inlet that takes surface water into a pipe. A catch basin is a yard drain with a box and a sump, so leaves and grit settle out instead of clogging the pipe.
Which size catch basin do I need?
Use the 9 in. basin at downspouts, in planter beds and in narrow side yards. Use the 12 in. basin for large low spots, driveway and garage edges, or where two pipe runs meet, since it connects to 3 in. through 8 in. pipe with the right adapter.
Can you drive over a catch basin?
The 12 in. NDS catch basin is suitable for light vehicle traffic when properly installed. The 9 in. basin is best suited to lawns, beds and walkways.
Where should catch basin water go?
Slope the outlet pipe downhill to daylight or a storm drain. If there is no downhill outlet, pipe it into a Flo-Well dry well so the water soaks back into the soil.
Can a catch basin be raised?
Yes. NDS makes 6 in. risers for both the 9 in. and 12 in. square catch basins for deeper installs.
