Grass Driveway Pavers: Cost, Base Prep & Installation Guide
Grass driveway pavers let you park on a lawn without ruts, mud or bare patches. A plastic honeycomb grid sits just below the grass. The grid carries the weight of the car, the grass roots grow through the cells, and rain soaks into the ground instead of running off a slab.

How Grass Driveway Pavers Work
Driving on plain lawn packs the soil down. Packed soil squeezes out air and water, so roots die and tires sink. A grass paver stops that. Its cell walls take the load and spread it across the base, so the soil inside each cell stays loose enough for roots to grow.
- Strength: NDS EZ Roll has an unfilled compressive strength of 53,683 psf and supports H-20 and H-25 loads (the ratings used for fire trucks).
- Drainage: the EZ Roll system is more than 90% permeable, so most rain soaks in where it falls.
- Looks: once the grass fills in, the grid is hidden. The driveway looks like lawn.

Rolls are fastest for straight, long areas because one roll covers 601.6 sq ft. Panels are easier to cut around curves and are the strongest option. Minimum Tufftrack grass pavers order is 160 panels (640 sq ft).
How Much Does a Grass Paver Driveway Cost?
Here is the paver material cost per square foot at our current prices (September 2026). Orders over $2,000 ship free, which covers a 4' x 150' roll or a 160-panel Tufftrack order. A single 4' x 24' roll ships for $120; five or more ship free.

Your total also includes base stone, topsoil, seed or sod, and labor. Those depend on your soil, your region and whether you hire a contractor, so we do not quote them.
How Deep Should the Base Be?
The base is what keeps a grass driveway from rutting. NDS recommends AASHTO #57 crushed stone, compacted, with these minimum depths:

NDS allows blending up to 15% sandy loam into the stone to give roots more room. A non-woven geotextile under the stone is optional and helps keep native soil from mixing into the base. Do not use woven fabric. If your soil drains poorly (heavy clay), plan for a perforated underdrain.
How to Install Grass Driveway Pavers
- Excavate and grade. Dig out enough depth for the base plus the 1 in. paver. Compact the subgrade.
- Lay and compact the base. Spread #57 stone to the depth in the table above and compact it.
- Roll out the pavers. Unroll EZ Roll (or lay Tufftrack panels) over the base. Leave at least 1 in. of clearance at concrete edges for expansion.
- Snap sections together. EZ Roll uses lateral locking tabs; Tufftrack uses tongue-and-groove clips. No tools needed. Staking is not usually needed on level ground.
- Fill the cells. Use well-draining sandy loam topsoil.
- Seed or sod. NDS suggests fast-growing, drought-tolerant mixes such as rye and fescue. Sod can go on top of the filled pavers.
- Water and wait. Water generously and keep vehicles off for 4 to 6 weeks.

Is a Grass Driveway Right for You?
A grass driveway works best where cars park or pass now and then. Good fits:
- A second parking spot or side-yard pad
- RV, boat or trailer parking
- A lawn you need to drive across to reach a garage or barn
- Overflow parking for guests
- Emergency access lanes

Can I just lay grass pavers on top of my lawn?
Not for a driveway. NDS says foot-traffic areas on slopes up to 3% need no base, but cars and pickup trucks need at least 6 inches of compacted #57 stone under the pavers. Without a base, the grid can sink and rut.
How long before I can drive on a new grass paver driveway?
Keep vehicles off for about 4 to 6 weeks while the grass establishes. Water generously during that time.
Can you park on grass pavers every day?
Grass pavers are made for occasional traffic, such as a second parking spot, an RV pad or an overflow area. Daily driving in the same tire tracks wears the grass. For a daily driveway, consider EZ Roll gravel pavers, which hold gravel in place and can be plowed.
How long do plastic grass pavers last?
