How EZ Roll Grass Pavers Work

The NDS EZ Roll Grass Paver system allows light to heavy vehicular traffic over grass without causing damage. By stabilizing soil and preventing compaction, these pavers create a durable, long-lasting solution for areas subjected to foot and vehicle traffic. The grass root zone is reinforced and protected by a gridwork of hexagonal cells.

Base Preparation

NDS recommends a compacted AASHTO #57 stone base sized to the traffic:

A non-woven geotextile under the base is optional. Poorly draining soil may need a perforated underdrain. Leave at least 1 in. of clearance at concrete edges.

Filling & Seeding: Choosing the Right Soil

Fill the cells with native topsoil, sandy loam or loam. NDS does not recommend sand, or native soil with a high clay content: clay holds water and starves the roots of air, and sand doesn't hold the turf. A well-draining sandy loam is the safe default.

• Fill from the outside in. Work from the edges toward the middle and avoid driving on empty pavers. If a loader or dump truck has to cross empty cells, keep it moving straight; sharp 90-degree turns can shift the panels.
• Overfill slightly. Leave the soil ¼ to ½ in. above the top of the cells, level with the surrounding grade. Once the grass fills in, the cells are barely visible.
• Plant within 30 days. Seed, hydroseed or sod (laid on top or recessed). A fast-growing, drought-tolerant mix such as rye and fescue works in most climates; NDS also recommends a thatch-resistant turf.
• Let it establish. Water generously and keep vehicles off for 4 to 6 weeks, until the grass is rooted well enough to anchor the pavers.

Edges, Slopes & Staking

Edges. Leave at least 1 in. between the pavers and any concrete curb, walk or slab so the plastic can expand. NDS's edging detail shows a 6 in. x 6 in. concrete edge as an option, with the sod sitting about ½ in. above the paver. On fire lanes, NDS shows optional reflective delineators along the edge so drivers can find the lane under grass.

Staking. On level ground, EZ Roll grass pavers usually don't need stakes. Every panel has molded eyelets for NDS GPSTAKE anchors (12 in. x 3/8 in. galvanized steel), which are sold separately. Where stakes are used, NDS places them at the corners and center of each roll end and every 10 ft along both edges, plus extra at cuts and turns.

Slopes. The NDS written specification is stricter than the base table above for grass-filled EZ Roll:

For emergency access lanes, NDS recommends anchoring with GPSTAKE stakes and fender washers at cross slopes of 5% or more and at sharp 90-degree turns. Keep the bottom of the base at least 3 ft above the seasonal high water table. If your site is steeper than 5%, send us the plan with a quote request and we'll include stakes and check the layout with NDS.

Maintenance

Mow and water like a normal lawn. Check the surface now and then and replace any damaged section. Don't run thatching or scalping equipment over the pavers, and when plowing snow use skid shoes or raise the blade at least 2 in. NDS notes grass surfaces are for emergency and occasional traffic; daily driving in the same tracks will wear the grass.
